Who we help

Health insurance for business owners

You are both the employer and the household. The right answer usually sits between the two, and it changes as the company grows.

Overview

Health insurance for business owners is a different problem from either individual coverage or group benefits, because you are deciding for your family and for your payroll at the same time — and the tax treatment of each is not the same.

Swierc Health works with LLC owners, S-corp shareholders, partners, and family businesses to compare owner-only coverage, a formal group plan, and hybrid approaches, then coordinate the choice with your accountant.

Already know you want employee benefits? Go straight to small business group plans. Company of one? Start with self-employed coverage.

Decisions we help owners make

  • Owner-only or group?

Below a certain headcount and wage level, individual coverage for everyone can beat a group plan for total household economics. We run both.

  • How to treat family on payroll

Spouses and adult children on payroll change eligibility, participation counts, and sometimes the entire structure.

  • Tax coordination

Premium deductibility differs across sole proprietorships, partnerships, S-corps, and C-corps. We flag the questions; your CPA rules on them.

  • Key-person protection

Life insurance and critical illness coverage on the people the business cannot operate without.

  • Recruiting leverage

What benefit package makes your offers competitive without committing to a cost the company cannot carry in a slow quarter.

  • Growth planning

The plan that fits three employees is rarely the plan that fits fifteen. We build with the next threshold in mind.

Our engagement with owners

  1. Understand the entity

Structure, payroll, family members employed, and how compensation is taken.

  2. Model the options

Owner-only, group, and hybrid, with total company cost and household cost shown separately.

  3. Coordinate with your CPA

We put the plan and premiums in front of your accountant before anyone signs.

  4. Implement and maintain

Enrollment, onboarding for new hires, and an annual review keyed to your renewal date.

Signs your current setup needs a review

  • Your renewal increased by double digits and nobody shopped it
  • You are on a plan chosen when the company was half its current size
  • Family members on payroll are covered inconsistently
  • You have no coverage on the person whose absence would stop revenue
  • Employees complain the plan is unusable because of the deductible
  • You are paying for a group plan most employees decline
  • Nobody has looked at dental, vision, or supplemental options in years

Independent advice, on your side of the table

Carrier-employed representatives can only present their own products. An independent advisor is appointed with multiple carriers, so the comparison includes the plan that is right even when it is not the most familiar name.

For owners, that independence matters most at renewal. Renewals are where cost creeps in quietly — a nine percent increase every year doubles the spend in less than a decade if nobody shops the market.

There is no fee for the advising relationship. Compensation is paid by the carrier, and rates are state-filed, so the company pays the same premium either way.
